Just a note to welcome you to this lovely degree, Peter. As others have said, the Mark is often referred to as the "friendly" degree and I sincerely wish you many happy and enjoyable years with us.

If you ever need any help or advice, please do not hesitate to get in contact.

Fraternally yours,

Peter J Ribi - PGStwd - (Mallet & Chisel Lodge No:5)

Many Congratulations Peter on joining one of the nicest and most important degrees in Masonry. My original Mark Lodge was in East Lancs. I have just completed two years in the Chair of my current Mark Lodge in Northumberland. I Installed my successor last Thursday. I am also 3rd Principal in a Scottish Chapter, where the Mark is the 1st of the 3 degrees inculcated in the Chapter here. Enjoy the beauty and friendliness of this lovely degree. And Mark Well.

Thanks Martin, I've been trying to join the Mark in the last year but the members of my lodge discouraged it and they addressed me to a HRA chapter...

Oh my, please do follow your heart on this - you are so right to do so.

It is indeed sad that one of the most meaningful degrees in Freemasonry is so often overlooked in the rush to get a Bro. into "more important" Degrees such as Chapter, KT's, Red Cross etc. Mark Masonry inculcates most if not all of the import and ethos of the other Degrees. There are no Degrees more "important" than another (except to those misguided souls who think that being a member of "such and such" a Degree will enhance their honours). Every Degree is 'separate and distinct' and is special in its own individuality.

Do not be put off being Advanced into Mark Masonry. It is a lovely and "important" Degree in its own right.

My name recently went forward for the Red in Youghal. My Mother Lodge is in Cork City but as a historian Youghal really attracted me! Royal Arch Masonry in Youghal was known as early as 1743 – the earliest verifiable reference to this branch of the Masonic Order in Ireland.

A periodical – Faulkner’s Dublin Journal, dated 14 January 1744 – reported the following:

‘A great St John’s Day (27 December 1773) procession was held in the town of Youghal when the Masonic lodge (No. 19, warranted in 1733) met, after which the procession left the lodge premises and marched through the town to the church for service. The town was en fete; ships in the harbour were decorated and fired a salute of guns, while flags and bunting were everywhere displayed. The procession was headed by a band of musick, deacons and wardens carried their mauls and badges of office, the worshipful master being preceded by a Royal Arch.’
